Three of My Stories Accepted to Northern Haunts Anthology!

Posted in Books, Freelance Life with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on August 28, 2008 by Jason

Three of my stories (“Lures: A Fish Story”, “Raven’s House”, and “Coventry Greens”) will appear in Northern Haunts: 100 Terrifying New England Tales, the upcoming anthology from Shroud Publishing.

I have no doubt that a host of great stories will fill this book. Shroud Publishing’s Tim Deal is the editor, and he is also the mastermind behind Shroud: The Journal of Dark Fiction and Art and the anthologies Abominations and Beneath the Surface.

Proceeds from the sale of this book are going to the American Cancer Society, so I urge everyone out there to buy a copy – heck, buy two or three and give them out as Christmas gifts. You’ll be getting some great fiction and helping a worthy cause.

You can already preorder Northern Haunts: 100 Terrifying New England Tales. The title will be available in hardcover as well as trade paperback. Click here or on the cover to order your copies!

Write a folk song about the zombie apocalypse– just the lyrics; you don’t have to do anything too fancy.

Post your folk song (or a link to your song) in the comments section.

Blatant Promotion: Obama, McCain, and More

Many heads will be turned to the Democratic National Convention being held this week in Denver, so I thought I would take this opportunity for a little blatant promotion on behalf of my girlfriend. Stay with me – it makes sense. You see, she creates graphic designs for clothing, and some of her chibi designs are politically themed. You can find designs for Obama and McCain – and even Clinton. Check out the picture of Obama below.

Of course, she also makes pirate and ninja gear and she is working on a line of zombie designs as well.  And yes, I’ll definitely promote that here as well.  Click here to check out some of her other designs. She can even do some custom stuff if you need.

New Voices in Horror Volume 1

The e-book version is now available! My short story “Anatomy of the Terrible” is featured in New Voices in Horror Volume 1, an anthology envisioned and put together by David “Doc” Byron and edited by Corey Scales. The anthology will boast quite a few great authors, including Joseph D’Lacey (author of Meat) and Simon Wood (author of Working Stiffs, Accidents Waiting to Happen, and Scrubs, which he wrote under the pseudonym Simon Janus). It promises to be a fun and frightening read.

Click the cover to head on over to the New Voices in Fiction website and purchase the e-book.

“Anatomy of the Terrible” is the story of Kagan, a man who is on the run for brutal murders that he didn’t commit…or did he? His fragmented memories recall something else, something supernatural. And now an unseen force is beckoning him to the New Mexico desert.

Literate Machine Hosts “Confession of a Righteous Serial Killer”

Posted in Freelance Life with tags , , , , , , , , , on August 19, 2008 by Jason

A new website, Literate Machine, offered to take my short story “Confession of a Righteous Serial Killer” and host it on their site, where people can download it for a whopping zero dollars and zero cents. That’s right, completely FREE. As some of you might remember, “Confession…” is one of my older short stories, one that was published a long time ago in the magazine Black Petals. It is a simple revenge story, but I still like it.

So, how did my story come to be placed on Literate Machine? Well, the circumstances surrounding it are a bit synchronistic. Several days ago, I was perusing the site of an excellent dark fiction writer named Kevin Lucia. I noticed that he had written a comic called The Sliding and that I could see some of it on Literate Machine. It was late, so I decided that I would visit the site the next day.

Well, when I got up the next morning and checked my e-mail I had a friend request on MySpace from Literate Machine. Strange, right? So I accepted them and shortly after, I was contacted about “Confession of a Righteous Serial Killer.” Weird how the world works, huh?

If you want to download my story, click here, and then check out all of the wonderful works available on their website. You can find short stories, novels, comic books, and more. Most of the stuff is free or very affordable.
